FALLOUT
Amazon Prime Series
“Fallout” is an American post-apocalyptic drama series developed for Amazon Prime Video by Graham Wagner and Geneva Robertson-Dworet. The series, inspired by the popular role-playing video game franchise originally created by Interplay Entertainment and currently owned by Bethesda Softworks, delves into the aftermath of a catastrophic nuclear event.
In 2020, Amazon secured the rights to develop a live-action adaptation and officially announced the project in July of that year. The series is a collaborative effort between Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy’s Kilter Films and Bethesda Game Studios, with Nolan directing the initial three episodes. Todd Howard, a Bethesda Game Studios producer who has directed several games within the franchise, is an executive producer alongside Nolan and Joy. In January 2022, Robertson-Dworet and Wagner were appointed as showrunners, and by early 2022, actors Walton Goggins and Ella Purnell were confirmed to star.
The series premiered on Prime Video on April 10, 2024, and has been met with positive critical acclaim. Critics have particularly praised the performances of Purnell, Goggins, and Aaron Moten, as well as the show’s writing, visuals, production design, and loyalty to its original video game source material.
Premise
“Fallout” unfolds in an alternate history of Earth, marked by advanced nuclear technology development post-World War II which led to a retrofuturistic society and a devastating resource war. Following a nuclear apocalypse, survivors sought refuge in “Vaults,” fallout bunkers designed to preserve humanity. Unbeknownst to the inhabitants, these Vaults also served as sites for secretive psychological experiments.
Over two centuries later, the narrative follows Lucy MacLean as she leaves Vault 33 to navigate the ruins of Los Angeles, searching for her missing father. Along her journey, Lucy allies with a young Brotherhood of Steel squire and a ghoul bounty hunter, both of whom harbor deep secrets and personal vendettas.
